The cause isnā€™t a filter or dye ā€” itā€™s salt-loving bacteria and algae, mainly Salinibacter ruber and Dunaliella salina, that produce reddish pigments to protect themselves from the lakeā€™s extreme salinity, which is nearly as high as the Dead Sea.
