Depending on the season there are different activities to enjoy around Lake Tahoe due to the wide range of weather fluctuations. The typical temperature range from March through May is between 50 and 60 degrees Fahrenheit. As the springtime wildflowers begin to blossom, the view is just stunning with a frost still in the air.

In the summer between June and August, when temperatures frequently reach around 75 degrees Fahrenheit is when Lake Tahoe is most popular and busy. The main lure of the lake is the abundance of outdoor leisure activities that can be done on the lake itself, such as swimming, boating, and other various water sports.

With temperatures averaging around 60 degrees Fahrenheit and the leaves turning color, fall (September to November) is a delightful season at Lake Tahoe and a great time to explore the lake’s many hiking trails while taking in the breathtaking fall scenery.

The temperature in winter is around 20 degrees Fahrenheit (December–February). During this season, Lake Tahoe is transformed into a winter wonderland. Some of the best skiing and snowboarding in the nation can be found at the lake’s several ski resorts.

Near Lake Tahoe, California, there is a popular granite rock climbing spot called Lover’s Leap. There are several different climbing routes available in the area for climbers of all experience levels. Although the major climbing season is from spring to fall, some routes may be climbed all year round with the right weather.

The area offers a variety of climbing styles, including crack climbing, face climbing, and slab climbing. Some popular routes include “The Prow” (5.9), “The West Face” (5.10a), “The East Face” (5.11a) and “The Great White Book” (5.12a).

Lover’s Leap also features a good number of multi-pitch routes, which allow climbers to ascend taller cliffs. Some popular multi-pitch routes include “The Regular Route” (5.7), “The Southwest Ridge” (5.8), “The East Face” (5.11a) and “The Great White Book” (5.12a).

A good level of physical fitness and the right gear, such as a climbing helmet, climbing shoes, a harness, and quickdraws, are necessary for climbing at Lover’s Leap. An Eldorado National Forest permit is required to climb at Lover’s Leap. A permit can be purchased at either the self-service station or the ranger station. While climbing at Lover’s Leap, it is also critical to be conscious of and adhere to ‘Leave No Trace’ principles, such as not leaving any garbage or human waste behind.

Donner Summit, located near Lake Tahoe is a popular spot for rock climbing enthusiasts. The area offers a wide variety of climbing routes for climbers of all skill levels. The peak climbing season is typically from spring to fall, but some routes may be accessible year-round depending on weather conditions.

The climbing at Donner Summit is primarily granite rock, which offers great friction and solid protection for climbers. Most routes are traditional, meaning climbers must place their own protection as they climb. However, there are also sport climbing routes with pre-placed bolts for protection.

Donner Summit offers a diverse range of climbing styles, including crack climbing, face climbing, and slab climbing. Climbers will need to have a good level of fitness and proper equipment, including a climbing helmet, climbing shoes, harness, and quickdraws, to climb at Donner Summit. Climbing at Donner Summit requires a permit from the Tahoe National Forest, which can be purchased at the ranger station or the self-service station.

Tahoe Via Ferrata is suitable for people with little or no previous climbing experience, as long as they are in good physical condition. Participants are provided with all necessary safety equipment, including a helmet, harness, and via ferrata lanyard, which attaches to the fixed cables and allows participants to climb safely. The guides will give instruction on the use of the equipment and the proper techniques for climbing.

Tahoe Via Ferrata routes vary in difficulty, some are easier and more family-friendly, while others are more challenging and require more advanced technical climbing skills. Most routes are around 2-4 hours long.

The guided experience typically takes place in the summer and fall months (June-September) when the weather is milder and the rock is dry. The exact location of the climb will depend on the route chosen and the conditions on the day of the climb.

Rooster rock is located near Rubicon point and offers a great opportunity to go cliff jumping. Jump off the top of the rock for an adrenaline pumping 30+ feet of free-fall into lake Tahoe. Cliff jumping is always at your own risk so proceed with caution, check water depth and look out for any rocks. If you are unsure of the exact spot to jump from, ask a local. What a fun way to cool off on a hot summer’s day.

Cave Rock is the craggy remains of a prehistoric volcano located above Lake Tahoe. The cliffs at Cave Rock range in height from around 10 to 40 feet, with the most popular spot for jumping being around 30 feet. The water is deep, and the lake is generally calm, making it a good spot for swimming, diving, and of course jumping. Please be aware that jumping will always be at your own risk so take all the necessary precautions like checking the water depth and looking out for rocks. 

The area is also of cultural significance to the Washoe tribe, so it’s important to be respectful of the site and the surrounding area at all times. Please take all rubbish home with you.

Ski & Snowboard At Kirkwood Mountain Resort

Kirkwood Mountain Resort is a ski area located near Lake Tahoe. The resort is located in the Sierra Nevada mountain range. It is known for its challenging terrain and abundant snowfall. Kirkwood Mountain Resort has a wide range of ski runs for skiers and snowboarders of all skill levels, including long cruisers, steep chutes, and challenging terrain parks. In Emerald Bay State Park, there is a well-known waterfall called Eagle Falls. The trail head is close to the Vikingsholm parking area, and the waterfall itself is roughly 2.5 miles from there with 400 feet in elevation gain. The well-maintained, largely flat track is a loop with a few moderate inclines. Beautiful views of the lake and the surroundings may be seen from the trail as it meanders through the woodland.

In order to avoid crowds on the trail during the summer, start your hike either early in the morning or late in the day. Also, be weather-ready because things can change quickly in the mountains. It’s also important to be aware of bears in the area and follow the bear safety recommendations provided by the park.
