Mauritius Thrill-Seeker Bucket List

Surrounded by crystal-clear, turquoise waters and covered in lush forested nature preserves, Mauritius is a tropical paradise that makes it all too easy to switch into vacation mode. With so many gorgeous beaches to choose from on the island, there is always something new and exciting to try out on the waves of the Indian Ocean, like at Le Morne Beach. It’s one of the most popular beaches for windsurfing, and is home of the legendary One Eye wave that experienced surfers everywhere dream of conquering one day.

Instead of endless water sport possibilities, maybe you’d prefer to get your vitamin sea a different way. Make some underwater friends while snorkeling at Pereybere Beach, swim with friendly dolphins, or take the plunge and go scuba diving at Blue Bay Marine Park. The best part is that Mauritius is sunny all year long, with the rainy season hitting in November through April. On average, the weather cools off a bit in July, making it one of the best times to visit the island.

Scuba Diving Mauritius

Mauritius is a tropical paradise with a huge variety of water activities to try, and sometimes you just have to just dive in! If you want to tackle scuba diving, you’ll need to take a PADI course and get certified. After that, you can add scuba diving locations onto all your future travel itineraries!

At Blue Bay Marine Park in Mahebourg, those who are age 10 or older can take the beginner level 3-day open water course to get started. The seasoned dive masters will set you up with all your equipment as well as an in-depth safety course. Soon, you’ll be effortlessly adventuring into the deep blue sea surrounded by colorful marine life and living your aquatic vacation dreams.

Underwater Ocean Walk with a Diving Helmet

Breathing underwater (without scuba gear) is now possible with underwater diving helmets! Board a motorboat that takes you out to the crystal-clear lagoon from Grand Baie, where you’ll receive a briefing on the experience and proper safety protocol. Now is your chance to walk along the ocean floor with a transparent, solar-powered helmet that lets you see all the marine life near the seafloor clearly. This is one of the top things to do in Mauritius if you are a sucker for unique experiences.

Exhilarating Canyoning Trip to Eau Bleue Waterfalls

Twenty minutes from the city of Curepipe, the azure blue pools at Eau Bleue reservoir provide a beautiful backdrop for having an exciting outdoor adventure. The ponds get their water from underground springs in the summertime, and the surrounding waterfalls make it feel like its own little secluded paradise. To go canyoning up these waterfalls, you can go on a guided tour where you’ll first discuss safety protocol and how to communicate effectively as a team before heading out to the river to scale each waterfall. It’s the perfect dose of thrills for the beginner abseiler along with plenty of chances to appreciate nature. Find the link to book this activity in the Tripio app.

Looking to add a unique water sport to your travel itinerary you may have never tried before? Head to FLYn’Dive in Grand Baie for an awesome adventure for ages 12 and up. Here, the certified instructors will take you through the safety guidelines and detailed equipment instructions before you go out onto the water to try it yourself. It may take a few tries to get used to it, but you’ll be flying in no time!

You’ll soon be propelled into the air at around 3-10 feet high where you can hover, move around, or even do a flip if you’re feeling brave and coordinated. This is all depending on your skill and comfort level. Try it solo or as a couple standing together on one hydro-board.

Once-in-a-Lifetime Skydiving Experience

Is skydiving on your travel bucket list with Tripio? If you’re on the island and are craving that adrenaline rush, Skydive Mauritius will help you fly high! Safety is their top priority, so before your experience you’ll be given a complete breakdown of your dive, practice positioning, and get geared up for your tandem skydive at 10,000 feet. Above the clouds, you can see the island from the plane in all its glory surrounded by the clear blue Indian Ocean – a truly breathtaking sight that’s very top 10-worthy. After the 20-minute plane flight, your 30 second freefall will begin!

The sensation of falling at such high speeds can be described more like floating. Depending on what package you purchase, your tandem instructor can record, take photos, or both. When the freefall part is over, the parachute will open and you’ll float down to earth, having just experienced the ride of a lifetime.

Zipline Excursions at La Vallée Des Couleurs

If you’re a huge nature lover and want to have a bird’s eye view of Mauritius’s natural beauty, this nature park is where you should be. Here, you can experience several different ziplines that will have you soaring over lush landscapes and cascading waterfalls that will give you some unforgettable travel memories.

Via Ferrata, Zipline, and Suspension Bridge – Lavilleon Adventure Park

Lavilleon Adventure Park has so much to do, you could easily stay here and be fueled by pure adrenaline for an entire afternoon! Go hiking, ride the ziplines, try archery, go horseback riding, cross the Nepalese suspension bridge, or go rock climbing via ferrata. There are even activities like ziplining, tortoise interactions, and fishing specifically for kids to enjoy. Each activity is scenic, breathtaking, and heart-pounding in its own way, and you’re sure to be exhausted from the sheer rush of  having such a perfectly adventurous day. It’s definitely one of the best things to do in Mauritius for thrill-seekers.

Guided Trek to Summit of Le Morne Brabant – World Heritage Site

Photo by Ondrej Bocek on Unsplash

Le Morne Brabant is both a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the top 10 best things to do in Mauritius. The summit stands at 1,824 feet above sea level that can be climbed with the help of a certified guide. The mountain is a symbol of freedom and is a major place of cultural significance due to the slaves that lost their lives on the cliff while fleeing from slavery in 1834.

The trek to the top is 2.1 miles of occasionally very steep terrain, which is especially tricky on the second part of the hike, as it involves a scramble to the peak. The last leg shouldn’t be attempted directly after it’s rained. Along this gorgeous hike, you’ll get to see exotic flora and fauna native to the island as well as the spectacular views from the top. Be sure to spot the amazing underwater waterfall near Le Morne Beach from this viewpoint!

Windsurf the Legendary One Eye Wave

The legendary One Eye is one of the cleanest and fastest windsurf waves on earth! In the best conditions, the wave’s tube can stretch for hundreds of feet along the reef where you can catch some serious air. You can rent a windsurfing board at Le Morne Beach if you don’t have your own, and can find the wave by going north, towards the lee of Pointe du Morne.

If you’re an avid windsurfer, you may be jotting this one down on your bucket list at this very moment. However, though this wave is certainly an incredible experience, it can also have a dangerous lip near the sharp reef that has been known to injure thrill-seekers who misread it or are less experienced. To see if you have what it takes, read through some of the stories and helpful sailing tips of those who have taken on this monster wave themselves within the Tripio app and add it to your custom itinerary!

Canyoning and Ziplining at Casela Rock Nature Park

If you aren’t walking with lions or enjoying the wildlife safari that Casela is known for, then maybe you’d like a taste of something a bit more thrilling to hold a spot on your custom top 10. You’ll want to be at Thrill Mountain, where there are several adrenaline-fueled activities to choose from, all equally fun and exciting!

Cross the Nepalese suspension bridge, zoom down a set of ziplines, try the dual-racing ziplines with a friend, go rock climbing via ferrata, or experience the thrill of the canyon swing. With so much to do on your vacation, you can easily try it all if you have the time to fit them into your Tripio custom itinerary for Mauritius.
